At present, many border towns that border China with the Soviet Union have successively carried out border trade with the Soviet Union. The trade between China and the Soviet Union can be divided into three levels, namely: trade between the state and the state; small-scale local trade at the provincial level; and “mutual market” trade between the border towns of the two countries. The latter, owing to the favorable geographical conditions and the viability of policies, has made trade more active and has received more and more attention from people. The Origin of China-Soviet Border Trade After the establishment of New China to the end of the 1950s, China’s trade with the Soviet Union has developed considerably. Trade during this period is entirely trade between countries. By the early 1960s, some of the provinces and regions adjacent to the Soviet Union had carried out local micro-trade with the Soviet Union and had stalled for only a few years.
