Objective To investigate the effect of ganglioside GM1 (GM1) on the changes of fatty acids involved in the phospholipids induced by ethanol. Methods The isotope labeled fatty acids were used to determine the incorporation rate of different components of the phospholipids, and the effects of GM1 and ethanol on the rate of incorporation were compared. Results Chronic ethanol exposure altered the incorporation of unsaturated fatty acids [oleic acid, linoleic acid, arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)] into phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine. The administration of GM1 enhances ethanol-induced changes, particularly selectively increasing the incorporation of DHA into phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylinositol. Conclusion GM1 enhances the re-acylation of the phospholipid induced by ethanol may be a post-injury repair mechanism.
