In Kierkegaard’s writings, the word “aesthetic” is used in two very different ways. On the one hand, it is related to the “aesthetic” in the artistic sense; on the other hand, it is also used as an ethical term to describe a life that fails to achieve its ethical potential. In the second sense, Kierkegaard applies it both to the “lost” individual and, more generally, to the age in which he lives.
