This thesis is intended to be an exploration into death theme in VirginiaWoolfs The Waves.It falls into three parts.The first part illustrates the pointthat death theme is among the most important themes in The Waves from threeaspects__two death events and the "enemy" that is always present.Thesecond part explores the respective efforts made by each of the six charactersto resist death and search for the meaning of life___through language, byseeking a "god", through a mystical sense of history, through totalinvolvement in natural life as well as reproduction, by indulging fully insensual pleasure and enjoying every moment, or by living in dreams.Thethird part discusses the authors views on death through an analysis offriendship__the main relationship presented in the novel, the uniquecharacterization, the uniform language used by the six characters, theinnovative structure, the thematic image and the last chapter__the summaryof the novel.Through the analysis, will be revealed Woolfs views that lifeand death exist side by side in an eternal renewal and that individual lives areinterrelated wich one another like waves in the sea.
