While local tumor growth is managed relatively successfully by usual cancer treatment modalities (surgical excision, radio-and chemo-therapy), treatment of metastatic diseases too often fails.While cancer incidence is known to augment with age, paradoxically, tumor growth and metastasis were often found to proceed at a slower rate in aged organisms, in both humans and in experimental models.The mechanisms of this interesting phenomenon should be investigated for pure theoretical reasons but also because they may suggest anti-metastatic treatment modalities.The mechanisms underlying the reduced tumor aggressiveness in aged compared to young organisms have not yet been established.Nevertheless, our group and other groups have demonstrated several mechanisms: 1) Decreased tumor cell proliferation in tumors from old mice; 2) Increased apoptotic cell death; 3) Reduced angiogenesis; 4) Modifications in anti-tumoral immune response.
