Rectal cancer constitutes a major clinical problem affecting the survival as well as the quality of life of patients. The treatment of these patients usually follows a multidisciplinary pattern with the surgical component being the most important modality to provide long term survival. The elective surgical treatment of rectal cancer usually involves either a low anterior resection (LAR) or abdominoperineal resection (APR).Ideally, four goals should be achieved in the treatment of this disease: locoregional control, prevention or treatment of distant metastases, preservation of the anal sphincter as well as of urinary and sexual functions and improved quality of life.Local recurrence rates of 10% to 14% have been reported with these conventional procedures.
