In additional to HPV, cervical carcinogenesis is also associated with environmental challenges.Environmental factors causing direct DNA damages are few, but, mostly modifying DNA without changing DNA sequences, termed" Epigenetics".Dense methylation of CpG islands at promoter regions can trigger chromatin remodeling through histone modifications with subsequent gene silencing.Latest researches demonstrate that epigenetic silencing of tumor suppressor genes by promoter hypermethylation is commonly seen in human cancer.Testing for DNA methylation has potential in cancer screening. Most previous studies of DNA methylation in cervical cancer used a candidate gene approach. Our previous work using genome-wide DNA methylation analysis identified several novel genes that are methylated in cervical cancers.
