Alkanethiolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(l 11) surfaces have been extensively studied because they provide highly ordered structures with widely tunable terminal groups, high reproducibility and chemical stability. However, alkanethiols usually are inclined to oxidize to disulfides and other oxidized species during the SAM formation. Thus, to elude this difficulty, other precursors including alkylthiocyanate have been investigated so far.
