Bio oxidation of Fe in gold ores by a Leptospirillum ferriphilum dominated culture was enhanced by 10-3M cysteine, while cysteine inhibited the bioleaching of As.In addition, the effect of cysteine on oxidation kinetics of Fe and As was studied by Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(SEM/EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR).SEM/EDS observations showed bioleaching products were mainly sulfur and jarosite.Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) led to the conclusion that cysteine has adsorbed on mineral powder surfaces.Combining the results of the bioleaching experiment , the analysis of SEM/EDS and FTIR leads us to conclude that cysteine addition just facilitated the electron transfer but did not change the gold ore oxidation mechanism.
