Patients with non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) report symptoms that can provoke distress, impair physical function, limit their ability to participate in activities of daily living (ADLs) and impact health related quality of life (HRQoL).This vicious cycle, whereby patients electively decrease their physical activity, contributes to further deconditioning and diminished fitness.Recently fitness, measured by peak oxygen consumption, has been shown to be a strong independent predictor of overall long term survival for people with NSCLC.Clinicians and researchers are becoming increasingly focused on interventions to improve fitness, HRQoL and lessen morbidity for patients living with NSCLC and this has stimulated interest in exercise intervention for this patient population.
