Historically, single celled bacteria have long been thought as self-motivated individuals, but since 1990s evidence has been accumulating rapidly that individual bacterial cells trequently communicate with each other through production, release and perception of small chemical signals, which could thus synchronize bacterial community responses to host and environmental changes such as production of virulence factors and formation of biofilms.
