Prostaglandin endoperoxide H synthases (PGHSs)-1 and-2, also known as cyclooxygenases (COXs)-1 and-2, convert arachidonic acid (AA; 20:4 ω-6) to prostaglandin endoperoxide H2 (PGH2) in the first step of prostaglandin synthesis:AA+2O2+2H++2e-→PGH2+H2O PGHSs are targets of nonspecific nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (nsNSAIDs) and COX-2 specific inhibitors called coxibs.
