Natural killer cell receptors (NKRs) are membrane proteins that provide specificity to immune cell responses in either an activating or inhibitory fashion. There are two major families of NKRs: NKRs that share homology with C-type lectins and Killer-cell Ig-like receptors (KIRs), which include 2B4.In the present study, we provide evidence that 2B4 is a major biomarker for immune cells of the gut mucosa in mice and humans.2B4 is expressed by the vast majority of hematopoietic cells in the small intestine and colon (~ 80%), but not in the peripheral immune organs (< 5%).
