Risk and Protective Factors for Suicide Mortality in Ukraine

  Background: The present study attempted to assess suicide risk and protective factors in Ukraine.Methods: Data includes suicide rates, prevalence of alcohol and alcoholic psychosis, prevalence of drug addictions, percentage of urban population and gross regional product for 23 provinces of Ukraine which were obtained from the State Statistical Office of Ukraine.Questions related to citizens religiosity, subjective health perception and education were obtained from the European Social Survey.Correlations and differences between mean values of the indicators and answers to selected questions in two Eastern and Western Ukraine were analysed.Results: Suicide rates are correlated positively with prevalence of alcoholism and alcohol psychosis, prevalence of drug addiction and percentage of urban population.Suicide rates are correlated negatively with religiosity, better subjective health perception, higher level of education and higher gross regional product.Some differences between indicators in Eastern and Western Ukraine were found.Conclusion: Religiosity was the strongest protective factor for suicides in Ukraine.Alcoholism, drug addiction and living in rural areas of highly urbanised provinces are important risk factors for suicide mortality.The difference in suicide rates in Eastern and Western Ukraine depends on the intensity and combinations of risk and protective factors.
