Death from cancer results primarily from the development of metastasis.We have identified MEK4 as an important therapeutic target for inhibiting expression of matrix metalloproteinase 2 (MMP2) and cell invasion in human prostate cancer (PCa) cells.PCa is a major cause of cancer death, and its incidence in China is rapidly rising.We have previously shown that the small molecule, genistein, a constituent of soy, inhibits MEK4 kinase activity.Genistein thereby inhibits activation of downstream signaling, decreases MMP-2 expression and cell invasion, inhibits human PCa metastasis in mice, and in phase II trials in subjects with PCa, it decreases MMP-2 expression in prostate tissue.
