Although the processes of invasion and metastasis account for 90% of cancer fatalities, no efficient drugs tackling these phenomena are available to date.The development of effective treatments for patients presenting with advanced disease is, indeed, one of the cardinal challenges in contemporary cancer research.Balancing this grand task, however, are the vast opportunities that still lie ahead in the field of natural product research.Indeed, of the enormous molecular diversity brought forth by Nature, a large part remains insufficiently charted.It is our task to use this biologically highly relevant part of chemical space as a muse, to derive scaffolds exhibiting interesting activities, and to modify them so that they optimally fulfill a medicinal purpose.
