Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a super family of zinc-dependent proteolytic enzymes which are responsible for the degradation of both the extracellular matrix (ECM) and basement membrane (BM).MMPs are involved in many physiological and pathological processes.Studies show that they play a crucial role in the tumor invasion and metastasis.MMPs have become the attractive targets for the development of anti-tumor drugs in recent years. As a member of MMPs family,MMP-14 (a kind of MT-MMP) combines pro-MMP2 to activate MMP-2 and degrades ECM component. It is considered to be the closest type in relation to tumor invasion among the MMPs family and hence becomes the new target for anti-tumor drug development.
