The duplex nucleation for primary Si in Al-Si alloy has been studied by crystallographic analysis and experiment verification.The edge-to-edge matching model was used for crystallographic investigation, and the results show that TiB2, AlB2, TiC and TiAl3 exhibit good crystallographic matching with AlP and primary Si, while Al4C3 exhibits poor crystallographic matching with AlP and primary Si.So the mechanism of the duplex nucleation for primary Si is probably that these compounds nucleate AlP and forming duplex nuclei which subsequently nucleate the primary silicon in Al-Si alloys.The verified experimental result is consistent with the duplex nucleation mechanism, and the orientation relationship found by TEM is coincident with the edge-to-edge matching model.
