The hepatitis B virus is one of the major causes of liver disease worldwide, often leading to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.Universal immunization with hepatitis B vaccine has led to a substantial decline in the number of new, acute cases of hepatitis B among infants, adolescents and even adults in many countries around the world, particularly in the developed countries.However, it still remains to be a major global health problem and cause of mortality, in many parts of the world.The present lecture will focus on Hepatitis B treatment.At first, a brief introduction to Hepatitis B, its worldwide prevalence and the different modes of transmission will be introduced.Next, hepatic manifestations as a result of acute or chronic HBV infections will be discussed including the high/low risk patient groups.Then, Hepatitis B vaccine, its availability, impact, usage will be focused on.For those who contract the disease, treatment options will be highlighted next.Drugs used in the past, drugs in current clinical use and treatment choices based on country, availability, patients socio-economic status, will be discussed, including recent updates on the efficacy of present therapies and also drugs that are in clinical development.Finally a brief introduction to the ongoing hepatitis B treatment at the present institution with a peek into the future of hepatitis B treatment will be summarized.
