Post-harvest losses are the major constraints of shallot production leading to high fluctuation of prices of bulbs.Shallot bulbs with high water content are liable to high storage losses-due to sprouting, rotting and shrinkage (physiological loss in weight). The use of appropriate post-harvest management practices such as drying (curing) methods and topping (foliage cutting) techniques help to improve the storability of shallot bulbs.Furthermore, keeping quality of bulbs is influenced by time of harvesting. Two experiments were carried out for four seasons (two years) aiming to develop appropriate harvesting time, and curing and topping methods with the ultimate goal of minimization of post-harvest losses and improvement of storage performance of shallot bulbs.
