Axillary lymph node (ALN) status is an important prognostic factor in the assessment of new breast cancer patients and therapy planning.It is currently determined histopathologically by sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for clinically node negative patients.SLNB has revolutionized the assessment of the axilla for patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer.However, SLNB is a time-consuming invasive procedure-Nevertheless SLNB is the current standard procedure because there is no other minimally invasive way to assess the axilla in clinically node negative patients.If SLNB could be replaced by a preoperative and non-invasive procedure, lymph node assessment would become more efficient and less uncomfortable for patients.
