在20世纪20年代的“科玄论战”中,张君劢认为科学涉及物质现象,是客观的;而人生观则纯粹关于精神现象,是主观的。人生观的问题不能由科学来解决,应该由玄学来解决。丁文江则认为不存在物质现象与精神现象的区分,所有的现象都是人的心理内容,都可以成为科学的材料。科学的万能是由科学的方法来保证的,科学必然能够解决人的心理内容,都可以成为科学的材料。科学的万能是由科学的方法来保证的,科学必须能够解决人生观的问题。丁文江主张以科学解决人生的问题本是为了保证人生观的客观性,但由于将物质现象归结为精神现象,反使科学失去了应有的客观性。
