This paper analyzes peoples identity in urban public space and the urban public space against the background of new urbanization,and by applying corresponding theories from environmental psychology,puts forward the design strategies for upgrading urban public space which can promote new immigrantsidentity and behavioral interaction.Identity in urban public space is mainly embodied in the following aspects: (1) The sense of value recognition (2) Environmental adaptability (3) Sense of belonging to the space (4) Interpersonal security.Urbanization is an unavoidable process in Chinds future development.The enduring existence of the "semi-urbanized" state of both formal immigrants with registered permanent urban residence and floating population without registered permanent urban residence,who have not been fully integrated into urban society in terms of employment,social behavior,social psychology,etc.,is not conducive to the realization and advancement of new urbanization or to the sound and comprehensive development of urban society.The identity of " new immigrants" is an important indicator for examining the interaction and integration between "new immigrants" and cities as well as their citizenization levels.Urban space should promote the collision and fusion of these cultures and of these groups,which involves both communications between newcomers and original inhabitants and communications among newcomers.The resulting interaction and causal connection between the collision and fusion and the development of urban civilization can jointly define the trend of the sound urban development.The design strategies for upgrading urban public space that promotes the identity and behavioral interaction of "new immigrants" : (1) Increase the regional characteristics of urban space (2) Increase cultural elements commonly shared by different user groups (3) Create more fuzzy spaces (4) Advocate the collective participation of different groups (5) Encourage new immigrants to make information feedback on the constructed space.
