Petroleum sulfonates are one important type of surfactants used in oilfield for oil flooding, and their characterizations are crucial for the improvement of oil yields. So, to find an efficient and accurate method is desirable. In the present study, a novel method for the chemical fingerprinting of petroleum sulfonates has been developed.Crude oil existing in petroleum sulfonate samples is first obtained, and then is analysed by gas chromatography.Characteristic chromatographic profiles of different brands or sources of samples offered by Shengli Oilfield are established.Pattern recognition of the chromatograms is performed using multivariate data analysis (chemometrics). To evaluate the performance of samples, interfacial tension values are adopted as the index. As a result, the total fifteen tested samples can be well evaluated by the standards established in the paper, which are in accordance to the results of interfacial tension of each sample. The method is validated by another eight samples. The method has successfully been applied to discriminate between different petroleum sulfonats, and it seems to be very promising for a variety of other applications.Of course, the interfacial activity difference is due to the difference of chemical constituents, and it will be very valuable to obtain the information about the constituents resulting in various interfacial activities. The technology adopted here is a possible reference approach to further investigate their intrinsic properties and find out which constituents are playing dominating role for interfacial activity in certain experimental environments.
