The basis and precondition for realizing variable spray is how to extract the accurate biomass information of the target.Nowadays,volume is calculated to represent the geometrical characteristic of the target as the control input of the variable spray system in the domestic and international research.But it is difficult to judge that the target area is sparse or thick by using the volume parameter.And error exists because of the irregular canopy shape and lots of gaps in the canopy by using the volume parameter.Leaf area density is the parameter used to represent the sparse degree of the target.However it is seldom used as the control input of the variable spray system due to the difficulty in the leaf area computation with non-destructive testing method.In this paper,a parameter called laser point density was proposed to describe the sparse degree of the target instead of the leaf area density.
