  In the conventional petro-chemical complex (PCC),naphtha is used as a raw material and is fed to naphtha thermal cracking center (NCC) and aromatics complex (AC) to produce mainly olefins (ethylene,propylene,butadiene,etc) and BTX (benzene,toluene and xylene),respectively.The NCC produces approximately ethylene of 30% and propylene of 15%.T-naphtha desulfurized from naphtha by NHT (naphtha hydro-treating) is used as a raw material of AC for the production of BTX.The Maxene process was introduced by UOP (USA) to separate n-paraffin and non n-paraffin from naphtha.This process contains a SMB unit and two distillation columns for desorbent recycling.UOP reports that the production of ethylene increases by 30% without decreasing the propylene production,when n-paraffin separated from the Maxene process is fed to NCC.However,their argument should be confirmed under the new situation of the petro-chemical market as follows: Propylene demand is increasing and propylene is preferred over ethylene,the butadiene price is sharply increasing,and the naphtha prices is increasing constantly in the last decay[1].The scope of this study is to evaluate the effects of naphtha separation into n-paraffin and non n-paraffin on PCC.The naphtha simulated moving-bed (SMB) unit with two distillation columns applicable to PCC including NCC and AC is modeled using the commercial process simulator,Aspen Plus.Simplified kinetic models of naphtha thermal cracking (NTC)[2] and naphtha catalytic reforming (NCR)[3] are used to calculate thecomposition of NTC and NCR products.Operating parameters of the system are optimized considering both separation efficiency and energy consumption.The total capital investment (TCI) of the SMB unit is estimated by using the factorial method[4] and AspenProcess Economic Analyzer on the basis of 2009 price.Economic feasibility is analyzed in terms of return on investment (ROI),payback period (PBP) and product value (PV).Sensitive analyses of the plant capacity,raw material cost,product yield and product prices are performed to investigate their impacts on PV.
