  Porous polymer monoliths,which can be prepared by in-situ polymerization of functional monomers and cross-linkers in the presence of porogens and initiators,were first developed in the early 1990s.1 The inherent advantages of porous polymer monoliths are their easy preparation,high chemical stability over a broad range of pH,and that they are amenable to surface functionalization by suitable selection of monomers.2 The low back pressure and high permeability of porous polymer monoliths enable fast and efficient separation of analytes.In this work,novel monomeric and polymeric β-cyclodextrin functionalized porous polymer monoliths were synthesized for rapid isolation and purification of active components from natural products.A poly(glycidyl methacrylate-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) monolithic matrix was first prepared,which was then functionalized with monomeric and polymeric β-cyclodextrin via reaction with epoxy groups.Various techniques,including fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,scanning electron microscopy,and mercury porosimetry were applied to characterize the synthesized monoliths,confirming the successful modification of monoliths with β-CD.It was demonstrated that polymeric β-CD modified monoliths had better separation and selectivity for puerarin,recovering puerarin with a purity of 96% (m%) and a yield of 90% (m%) (Figure 1(B)).In contrast,puerarin with a purity of 95% (m%) and with a yield of only 83% (m%) was recovered on the monolith modified with monomeric β-CD (Figure 1 (A)).
