Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a unicellular green alga about 10 micrometres in diameter.The photosynthetic pigments and machinary of C.reinhardtii are very similar to higher plants, so it is known as "green yeast".C.reinhardtii can also be used as a model organism for herbicide screening.Phytoene desaturase (PDS) is a key enzyme of carotenoid biosynthetic pathway.Carotenoids are very important natural pigments.They can protect plant chloroplasts and play an important role in preventing light damage to the photosynthetic system.Those herbicides that primarily target to suppress the activity of PDS can inhibit carotenoid biosynthesis.Thereby they can effectively affect the normal photosynthesis.
