Colorectal cancer is a leading cause of cancer related death in the United Kingdom and throughout the world.Curative treatment of this condition involves surgical excision of the primary tumour, and dependent on disease stage and location, combination therapy with neoadjuvant or adjuvant chemotherapy and radiotherapy.Historically, surgery for this condition involves an open operation, typically via a long midline incision.Post-operative pain following this approach is high, requiring high doses of opioid analgesic medication; and mobilisation is often slow, with patients generally requiring a lengthy stay in hospital. Two important new modalities, applied to colorectal cancer surgery, have revolutionised the operative management of this condition in the UK and elsewhere.
