Here we review Ge Hongs significant contributions in advancing early stage of Chemistry,Chemical Pharmacology, and Medicine.For example, inspired by alchemist Wei Bo-yangs(魏伯阳) description in 《Zhuoyi Cantong Qi》(周易参同契) and based on his own further study, Ge first described the chemical reactions of convertingdan-sha(丹砂) (crud mercury) toshui-yin(水银)(mercury) by heating and then reverse the reaction to by adding crud sulfur.He invented the method to make sublimatic compoundpi-shuang(砒霜) (arsenic trioxide) by combusting Realgar(雄黄)(arsenic ores) in the air.
