　　Acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is an insidious disease that results when immune system cells have been disabled by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV),dropping the bodys defenses against opportunistic diseases and infections.In the final decades of the 20th century this previously unknown virus circled the planet virtually unchecked,threatening humankind with one of the most serious and fiightening epidemics ever encountered.
