Although adolescents in school may not be at highest risk for HIV,population-level monitoring using school-based surveys can help identify changing trends in overall risk behaviours, suggest new prevention strategies, and help evaluate outcomes of community-wide efforts. As an example of such monitoring,I will describe the design and methods for the British Columbia Adolescent Health Survey (BC AFHS) of 2003,and the prevalence of HIV risk behaviours and associated risk and protective factors among Asian-Canadian adolescent students in Westem Canada.
