1.Screening Study:Point-of-care glucose testing and a "real-life" metabolic screening checklist were tested in outpatients treated with antipsychotics. The study design was a retrospective,cross-sectional,cohort study.A total of 92 (49 women and 43 men) underwent initial screening.Patient data were recorded on a metabolic screening checklist by a pharmacist or nurse. The screening checklist consisted of:demographics, vital signs,(height/weight,BMI,blood pressure, waist and hip circumference,point-of-care random glucose),personal and family knowledge of current illnesses (diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia),modifiable risk factors (smoking, alcohol, level of activity),current medication history and recommendations to the psychiatrist.63 (71%) met criteria for Level 1 metabolic risk (abdominal obesity); of these,38 (60%) met criteria for Level 2 risk (abdominal obesity plus high blood-pressure).Patients with random glucose >140mg/dL had a higher likelihood for being at Level 2 risk than Level 1 risk (X2=5.99,df=1,p=0.014).Overall,five percent of the 92 patients met criteria for "Pre-diabetes Risk".
