Type 2 diabetes is a major health risk in many countries and incidence rates are increasing.Diverse antidiabetic agents are available that act through various mechanisms on different organs.Mechanism-based mathematical models may be used to study the mechanism of action of new drug groups and predict the effects of new dosage regimens.Mathematical modeling and simulation can support to decrease time and costs of drug development.Optimized dosage regimens can be prospectively designed and clinically evaluated.Mechanism-based models are needed which describe and predict the effects of new drug groups and include elements of disease progression.
