Background:Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic disease prevailing in modem societies.Contributing factors accounted for diabetes include genetic autoimmune dysfunction and excessive intake of energy that leads to overweight or obesity.Diabetic patients require frequent subcutaneous insulin injection to bring circulating glucose levels under control.Due to the inconvenience of insulin administration,an orally active insulin replacement is an important target for drug development.Disclosed by Merck,Demethylasterriquinone (DMAQ) B 1,extracted from tropical fungus,Pseudomassaria sp.,is an orally effective compound at lowering blood glucose levels in diabetic (db/db) mice; however,the cytotoxicity associated with the quinone moiety warrants chemical modifications to alleviate its lipid oxidation potential.
