Animal-mediated seed dispersal is a key determinant of the spatial structure and dynamics of plant populations and communities.Wild apricot (Armeniaca sibirica) and wild peach (Amygdalus davidiana) (Rosaceae) are widely distributed across northern China.Their seeds, dispersed by rodents, are similar in phenology and nutrition content, but A.davidiana seeds are larger and harder than A.sibirica seeds. There are more A.sibirica trees and seedlings than A.davidiana in the field. We conducted enclosure and field experiments to test why A.sibirica is more successful in regeneration than A.davidiana.Within enclosures,A.sibirica seeds were dispersed by all of the scatter hoarders (Apodemus peninsulae,A.agrarius,Sciurotamias davidianus,Tamias sibiricus) ,whereas A.davidiana seeds were dispersed by S.davidianus only.In the field, more A.sibirica seeds were moved and cached rapidly by small rodents than A.davidiana seeds.A.sibirica caches had higher proportions of survival at 30 days than A.davidiana caches, but not by the next spring.Very few seedlings (0-6) of the two species were established from the rodent-made caches.Different rodent-mediated seed dispersal between the two plants was likely caused by seed coat (endocarp) hardness. These results suggest that when there are more rodents which disperse seeds the outcome is higher seed dispersal, and this leads to more successful regeneration of A.sibirica than of A.davidiana.
