Social subterranean rodents of Bathyergidae family are famous for their extended longevity.Statistical analysis of the data available reveals that practically for all the subterranean species their maximum lifespan (MLSP) exceeds those expected from common allometric regularities.Species-specific MLSP is correlated with basal metabolic rate, family affiliation, and reproductive traits that reflect instantaneous reproductive investments.Due to considerable differences in longevity between African mole-rats and other taxa of subterranean rodents there is,however,no apparently common positive correlation between MLSP and body mass. Also, the social system has no obvious effect on MLSP.The cooperatively breeding species give us the opportunity to compare the MLSP of breeders and non-breeders ("workers") .In nature, workers live far shorter life spans than breeders but in captivity these patterns may vary between species. In the naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) ,the MLSP in breeders and workers is almost the same whereas in mole rats of Fukomys genera, breeders live on average twice as long as non-breeders.In the northern mole vole (Ellobius talpinus) ,a social subterranean murid rodent, breeders also live longer than non-breeders.In social subterranean rodents reviewed here extended longevity is accompanied by negligible senescence.
