Ecological and behavioral studies of subterranean animals are challenging due to their subterranean life style which makes direct observations difficult.Effective live trapping without causing injuries to an animal, and handling of captured individuals are crucial for the ecological and behavioral studies. In this paper,we report the structure of a live trap and trapping technique for zokors. The trap,a stainless steel cage with a gate,a trigger, and a GSM/GPRS module,is installed in the tunnel of the fossorial rodent (Eospalax fontanieri) .The animal gets trapped when coming to close the burrow opening through the cage.Once triggered, the GSM/GPRS wireless module will send a signal to a mobile phone so that the researcher can handle the trapped animals with little delay.A field trial of this trap was carried out in alpine meadows in Tianzhu,China. The capture rate was 76%of all traps set with no injuries recorded. The average capture time of the live trap was 31.7 minutes (range,21.5-46.5 minutes) .This live trap is potentially useful for zokor research and is also potentially an effective live trap for other burrow excavating subterranean animals.
