A few studies recently have addressed the occurrence of fungi in deep-sea sediments, characterized by elevated hydrostatic pressure, low temperatures, high salinity and fluctuating nutrient conditions. In the present study, fungal diversity was evaluated in two sediment cores of ~40 cm length collected from a depth of ~5,500 m in the Central Indian Basin (CIB), by employing culture-dependent as well as culture-independent techniques.
