As the birthplace of Yangtze River,the Yellow River and Lancang Rive,Source Region of Three Rivers (SRTR) is the important resource of fresh water supplement in China.SRTR also has very obvious ecological function which forms ecological security barrier for Chinas Qinghai-Tibet plateau.The inland lakes in SRTR play an important role for the water cycle in Qinghai-Tibet plateau.Here the precipitation and snow melt are the main supply for the lakes.Moreover the lakes have the coordination function for the good ecological environment in the region.The monitoring results for 5 periods from 1976 to 2009 were extracted from TM data.And the spatial distribution characteristics,numbers and areas of the lakes analyzed (in the study all the lakes mentioned have area above 0.03 km2).In the study the index of the lake loss intensity (ILLI) was adopted to do the contrast analysis of lake atrophy condition.The relationship between changes of lakes’ area and number and precipitation,temperature was also discussed in the paper.The results show that from 1976 to 2009 the lakes’ area in SRTR decreased first and then increased.
