MNP-based Travel Mode Choice Analysis Associated with Ideal Residential Environment in Japan

  This study applies a multinomial probit(MNP)model to capture how ideal residential environment affects individual travel mode choice behavior in the context of Japan,which has an internationally well-recognized successful history of transit-oriented development.The author implemented a questionnaire survey in about 20 major Japanese cities in 2010 for deriving ideal urban forms from a perspective of residents and collected 863 valid questionnaires via a web survey.Using the collected data,this study first illustrates what are ideal residential environment for the Japanese people by focusing on distances to different daily facilities and what kinds of travel modes the Japanese people would like to choose under the ideal residential environment.The MNP model is estimated with respect to both actual and ideal travel modes to different daily facilities,respectively.A set of residents-oriented ideal urban forms are identified.Implications to planning practice are discussed.
