The National Transport Master Plan 2050 of South Africa(NATMAP 2050)is a long-term national transport master plan for South Africa that is comprehensive,multi-modal,integrated and dynamic.It provides a sustainable framework for implementing transport infrastructure and service provision.This Paper provides a high-level review and summary of the National Transport Master Plan and identifies lessons learned from the planning process which would be valuable for other countries that would like to embark on the development of a national transport master plan.The Paper summarises key features of the planning process and results and provides background on the transport planning governance in South Africa.Some key features of the Chinese transport master plan are given.Finally lessons learned from the NATMAP project are provided and conclusions are drawn.
