Olfactory information is processed in central structures of the insect brain.i.e.the antennal lobes.In order to understand the underlying mechanism of signal processing we used the Gal 4 driver system in Drosophila melanogaster and expressed two light inducible proteins (channel-rhodopsin (ChoR2) and Pac) in individual receptor neurons (ORNs) of the olfactory system in the larvae.Both proteins are activated by blue light (485nm).Using this technique we were able to stimulate single ORNs.
