In the mammalian ear, sounds are converted into cochlear vibrations which propagate on the basilar membrane as (forward) waves, from base to apex. These vibrations, in turn, are transduced into electrical receptor potentials in the hair cells of the organ of Cortiand encoded in the trains of action potentials of auditory-nerve fibers. The properties of basilar-membrane vibrations are fairly well known at a few basal sites of healthy cochleae in living animals.
