During latency, KSHV expresses only a small subset of its more than 90 open reading frames.Among these is the latency-associated nuclear antigen (LANA).LANA recognizes its specific DNA target sequences within the viral origin of replication that is part of the terminal repeat region. This marks the viral genome for replication by the host replication machinery.LANA also interacts with mitotic host chromosomes and thus mediates segregation of the episomal viral genomes to daughter nuclei.LANA is strictly required for viral persistence in the course of a lifelong latent infection.
