Demand of lithium is growing due to increased usage in electronic devices and electrical vehicles, and hence alternate resources are to be looked at for exploitation.Spent lithium ion batteries (LIBs) are one such resource continuously generated in view of its mass consumption, which currently occupies 23% of the global lithium production (USGS 2008-2013).The disposal of spent LIBs is hazardous due to the presence of anodic lithium which is inflammable when exposed to water or air.Besides lithium, LIBs also contain metals such as Co, Mn, Ni, Cu and A1.The LIBs generally have the metals in the range 5-20 wt.% Co and 5-7 wt.% Li along with other metals, and also contain ~15 wt.% organic chemicals and 7 wt.% plastics (Shin et al., 2005).Thus, recycling and recovery of the major components of the spent LIBs are critical to prevent environmental pollution and ensure material supply.
