Uracil DNA glycosylases preserve the fidelity of DNA by catalyzing the removal of uracils.Moreover, B-lymphocytes utilize UNG activity in the development of the diverse antibody repertoire required for host immunity.All herpesviruses encode a UNG (vUNG), yet the role of the vUNG in the full pathogenic course of a gammaherpesvirus infection is unknown.We utilized murine gammaherpesvirus 68 (MHV68) to determine the influence of a vUNG in pathogenesis by generating a recombinant virus encoding a stop codon in the vUNG (ORF46).
