Herpesvirus nascent capsids, after assembly in the nucleus, undergo a process of primary envelopment at the inner nuclear membrane, resulting in escape of capsids from the nucleus to the perinuclear space.Fusion of the primary envelope with the outer nuclear membrane then results in translocation of capsids to the cytoplasm.Studies on alphaherpesviruses suggested that nuclear egress can be viewed as transport of capsids through the nuclear membrane mediated by vesicles induced by nuclear egress complex (NEC).
