Design:Prospective study of all consecutive patients, who received a lumbar disc prosthesis since February 2005.Objective:To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of a new artificial lumbar disc (Activ~L).Summary of background data:In the last years worldwide acceptance of artificial discs is evolving,to preserve the motion~segment and prevent adjacent segment degeneration.Materials and methods:The Activ~L disc is a mobile implant for total disc replacement with 2 metal plates and a Pe~inlay with a semi~mobile centre of rotation. The implant was newly developed to optimize the primary stability, provide variable options for the approach and a physiological motion,to protect the facet joints.35 cases with 39 artificial discs were included.Indications were single~level (18),double~level (7),3~level (1) disc disease and postdiscectomy syndrome (9).In 6 cases an ALIF L5/S1 was combined with a prosthesis.
