A plethora of microbes can cause plant disease, and plants have evolved a robust innate immune system that recognizes pathogen molecules and then activates defense.Immunity involves not only cell surface receptors that recognize apoplastic molecules, but also intracellular immune receptors of the nucleotide binding, leucine rich repeat (NB-LRR) class that resemble mammalian NOD-like receptors (NLRs).
